TOEIC Part1では、人が何かをしている写真だけでなく、誰もいない部屋や、家具・道具だけが写っている写真も出ます。
このタイプは、人物の動作ではなく、物の位置・向き・状態を聞き取る問題です。
写真を見た瞬間に、次の3点を確認します。
- 何があるか
- どこにあるか
- どんな状態か
人がいない写真では「動作」ではなく「状態」を聞く
たとえば、椅子がテーブルの周りに並んでいる写真。
よく出るのは、次のような文です。
Some chairs are arranged around a table.
椅子がテーブルの周りに配置されています。
The chairs have been placed next to the table.
椅子がテーブルの隣に置かれています。
A table is surrounded by chairs.
テーブルが椅子に囲まれています。
人がいない写真では、受け身の文が多くなります。
これらの文は、今まさに誰かが並べている・配置しているという意味ではありません。
並べ終わった状態・置かれた状態です。
人物が写っていなければ、
A man is arranging the chairs.
男性が椅子を並べています。
のような人物の動作を表す文は不正解です。
頻出表現1：be arranged
be arranged は、「並べられている」「配置されている」という意味です。
TOEIC Part1では非常によく出ます。
The chairs are arranged in a row.
椅子が一列に並べられています。
The tables are arranged in a circle.
テーブルが円形に配置されています。
Some books are arranged on a shelf.
本が棚に並べられています。
一列なら in a row、円形なら in a circle、周囲なら around がよく使われます。
頻出表現2：be placed
be placed は、「置かれている」です。
A lamp is placed on the desk.
ランプが机の上に置かれています。
Some boxes are placed against the wall.
箱が壁際に置かれています。
A vase has been placed in the center of the table.
花瓶がテーブルの中央に置かれています。
on the desk、against the wall、in the center of など、後ろの位置表現まで聞き取ります。
頻出表現3：be lined up
be lined up は、「一列に並んでいる」です。
Several chairs are lined up against the wall.
椅子が壁に沿って一列に並んでいます。
Some vehicles are lined up in front of the building.
車が建物の前に並んでいます。
Bottles are lined up on a shelf.
ボトルが棚に並んでいます。
複数の物が同じ向きで並んでいたら、候補に入ります。
頻出表現4：be stacked
be stacked は、「積み重ねられている」です。
Some boxes are stacked on the floor.
箱が床に積まれています。
The chairs are stacked in the corner.
椅子が隅に重ねられています。
Books have been stacked on a table.
本がテーブルの上に積み重ねられています。
横に並んでいるだけなら lined up、上に重なっているなら stacked です。
頻出表現5：be displayed
be displayed は、「展示されている」「陳列されている」です。
Some products are displayed on shelves.
商品が棚に陳列されています。
Paintings are displayed on the wall.
絵が壁に展示されています。
Several items are on display in the window.
いくつかの商品がショーウィンドウに展示されています。
店内、展示会、ショーウィンドウの写真でよく出ます。
頻出表現6：be hanging
be hanging は、「掛かっている」「吊るされている」です。
A picture is hanging on the wall.
絵が壁に掛かっています。
Some lights are hanging from the ceiling.
照明が天井から吊るされています。
Clothes are hanging on a rack.
服がラックに掛かっています。
壁なら on the wall、天井からなら from the ceiling です。
頻出表現7：be covered with
be covered with は、「〜で覆われている」です。
The table is covered with papers.
テーブルが書類で覆われています。
The ground is covered with leaves.
地面が落ち葉で覆われています。
The table is covered with papers.
テーブルが書類で覆われています。
covered with は、物の表面が何かで広く覆われている状態を表します。
頻出表現8：be empty / unoccupied
誰もいない部屋では、空席や空の状態も出ます。
The room is empty.
部屋には誰もいません。
Some seats are unoccupied.
空いている席があります。
The tables are not being used.
テーブルは使用されていません。
empty は部屋や容器が空、unoccupied は席や部屋が使用されていない状態です。
場所を表す頻出表現
物の名前が聞き取れても、場所が違えば不正解です。
next to
〜の隣に
A cabinet is next to the desk.
in front of
〜の前に
Some chairs are positioned in front of the stage.
behind
〜の後ろに
A shelf is located behind the counter.
against the wall
壁に接して、壁際に
A sofa has been placed against the wall.
in the corner
隅に
Some boxes are stacked in the corner.
in the center of
〜の中央に
A plant is in the center of the room.
along
〜に沿って
Benches are positioned along the walkway.
beneath / under
〜の下に
A bag is under the table.
above
〜の上方に
A clock is mounted above the door.
位置だけでなく「向き」も出る
TOEIC Part1では、物がどちらを向いているかも聞かれます。
The chairs are facing the table.
椅子がテーブルの方を向いています。
The seats are facing each other.
座席が向かい合っています。
The desks are facing the windows.
机が窓の方を向いています。
face は「顔」ではなく、動詞で「〜の方を向く」という意味です。
最低限覚えておきたい頻出表現
- be arranged：配置されている
- be placed：置かれている
- be lined up：一列に並んでいる
- be stacked：積み重ねられている
- be displayed：展示・陳列されている
- be hanging：掛かっている
- be covered with：〜で覆われている
- be surrounded by：〜に囲まれている
- be facing：〜の方を向いている
- be positioned：配置されている
- be located：位置している
- be mounted：取り付けられている
- be empty：空である
- be unoccupied：使用されていない

まとめ
誰もいない写真が出たら、人物を探す必要はありません。
見るのは、次の3つです。
- 物の配置
- 物の状態
- 物の位置と向き
特に、
arranged / placed / lined up / stacked / displayed / hanging
は頻出です。
