TOEIC Part5で because of と due to の2択で迷ったら、見る場所はひとつ。
空欄の前。
今回は、TOEIC Part5でよくでる前置詞・接続詞を見極める方法について解説します。
結論：空欄の前に何が入っているか？で見極める
due to を選ぶ形
名詞 + be動詞 + due to + 原因
例：
- The delay was due to heavy snow.
- The cancellation was due to a system error.
delay / cancellation / error / increase / decrease みたいな「結果名詞」が主語なら、due to。
because of を選ぶ形
動詞 + because of + 原因
例：
- The train was delayed because of heavy snow.
- The event was canceled because of a system error.
was delayed / was canceled / increased / decreased みたいに「何が起きたか」を言っているなら、because of。
判定方法
- The delay was ______ heavy snow.
空欄の前が名詞 + be動詞
→ due to - The train was delayed ______ heavy snow.
空欄の前が動詞
→ because of
ここだけ押さえればOKです。
ただし、後ろが文章であれば”because”
because of も due to も、後ろは名詞です。
- because of heavy snow
- due to heavy snow
後ろに文が来ていたら、どちらも不可です。
- because it snowed heavily
- because of heavy snow
- due to heavy snow
つまり、
because + 文
because of + 名詞
due to + 名詞
です。
despite / although も同じ
TOEICでは一緒に出ます。
despite + 名詞
although + 文
例：
- despite the rain
- although it rained
前置詞・接続詞一覧
後ろに名詞が来る
- because of
- due to
- despite
- in spite of
- thanks to
- owing to
- during
- without
- instead of
後ろに文が来る
- because

まとめ
because of と due to で迷ったら、空欄の前を見る。
- 結果名詞 + be動詞 → due to
- 動詞で「何が起きたか」 → because of
さらに、
- 文が続く → because / although
- 名詞が続く → because of / due to / despite
これで判断できます。
TOEIC Part5は、時間をかけすぎないことが大切です。
空欄の前後を見るだけで答えが見えることも多いので、得点源にしやすい問題が多いです。
